About The Hemingway Inn

Thank you for your interest in The Hemingway Inn in San José, Costa Rica. An authentic Spanish mansion in Barrio Amón, the Hemingway is a greatly photographed building in San José. Though the city has grown around it, it was originally built as a large hacienda for the family of a wealthy coffee plantation owner in the 1920´s. Still retaining its former charm it was remodeled to become a friendly bed and breakfast.
Though none of the seventeen guest rooms are the same, they all have singles, queen or king beds, cable television with over 60 channels in Spanish and English, telephone with free calls within Costa Rica (and ability to make international calls with a credit card or charged to your bill). We offer clock radios with alarms, an insured in-room safe ($3/night), and a private tiled bath with hot water shower in every room.

 

All 17 rooms are equipped with ceiling fans to circulate the air, as heating and air-conditioning are not needed in San José. Rated as one of the world's great climates, we are 4,000 feet above sea level and enjoy a comfortable 72-75 degrees year -round.
We are happy to offer three room types—Deluxe, Standard, and Economy— subjectively based on size, ambience, and location within the hotel.  We also offer laundry service, free luggage storage, and secure gated parking ($8/day).
A self-serve complimentary tropical buffet breakfast is available on the garden patio each morning from 6 to 10 am. You will enjoy exotic fruit juice, home-made tamales, bread and local preserves, fresh local tropical fruits, mild white Costa Rican cheese, hard-boiled eggs, Gallo Pinto (a local rice and beans specialty), and freshly perked Costa Rican coffee or your choice of tea.

 

After a day exploring the sites and sounds of San José, relax and unwind in our open air warm tub on the jungle patio, or keep in touch with family, friends and business with our complimentary Free Wireless Internet access. We also offer a computer room upstairs for those traveling without a laptop.
Our knowledgeable bi-lingual staff can arrange for you to rent a reliable car or 4X4, or advise you on several types of educational tours. We can book your trips to the rainforests, to relax in thermal pools below an active volcano, go on a sunset cruise, or settle for the slow pace of a secluded sun-drenched beach. For the curious there is bird- and nature-watching, and for the adventurous you can climb a mountain, horseback ride or try some of the world's best (and safest) white-water rafting. The Hemingway is open 24 hours per day, and is about 40 minutes from the Juan Santamaría International airport (SJO). The International Airport offers safe taxi service, so if you’re not renting a car you can take one of the orange cabs at the exit of the airport.  They’ll put on the meter and will charge you around $22.  You may also pay in colones at that day’s exchange rate.  Use only the official Airport ones because there will also be other taxi drivers offering their services.  The direction is Barrio Amon, Street 9, Avenue 9, Behind the National Insurance Institute (INS) building, on a corner, a pink two story old Spanish house.  In Spanish you can tell the taxi driver to take you “Detras del INS en Barrio Amon, Calle 9, Avenida 9, Casa esquinera rosada de dos pisos”.  We can help you in setting up your hotel to airport transportation as well as other transportation needs you may have.
