About The Hemingway Inn

An authentic Spanish mansion in Barrio Amon, the Hemingway is one of the most photographed buildings in all of San José . Though the city has grown around it, it was originally built as a large hacienda for the family of a wealthy coffee plantation owner in the 1920´s. Still retaining its former charm, only twelve years ago it was completely renovated and remodeled to become an adorable bed and breakfast.

Though none of the seventeen constantly updated guest rooms are the same, they all have comfortable beds, cable television with over 60 channels in Spanish and English (including live feeds from New York of the Big 3 US networks), telephone with free calls within Costa Rica (and ability to make international calls with a credit card). We are proud to offer new furniture, clock radios with alarms, an insured in-room safe ($3/night), and a private tiled bath with hot water shower in every room. All 17 rooms are equipped with ceiling fans to circulate the air, but heating and air-conditioning are never needed in San José . Rated as one of the world's great climates, we are 4,000 feet above sea level and enjoy a comfortable 72-75 degrees year -round. We are happy to offer three room types—Deluxe, Standard, and Economy—based on size, ambience, and location within the hotel, depending upon ambience, size, and location. We also offer laundry service, free luggage storage, and secure gated parking ($8/day).

We offer a complimentary tropical buffet breakfast on the garden patio each morning from 6 to 10 am. You will enjoy eye-opening exotic fruit juice, home-made tamales, French bread and local preserves, fresh local tropical fruits, mild white Costa Rican cheese, hard-boiled eggs, Gallo Pinto (a local rice and beans specialty), and freshly perked Costa Rican coffee.

After a day exploring the sites and sounds of San José , relax and unwind in our Jacuzzi hot tub on the jungle patio, or keep in touch with family, friends and business with our complimentary Free Wireless Internet access. An 802.11g, Wi-Fi compatible "wireless Internet access system" is installed throughout the hotel. We also offer a computer room upstairs for those traveling without a laptop.

Our knowledgeable bi-lingual staff can arrange for you to rent a reliable car or 4X4, or advise you on several types of educational tours. We can book your trips to the rainforests, to relax in thermal pools below an active volcano, go on a sunset cruise, or settle for the slow pace of a secluded sun-drenched beach. For the curious there is bird- and nature-watching, and for the adventurous you can climb a mountain, horseback ride or try some of the world's best (and safest) white-water rafting. The Hemingway is open 24 hours per day, and is about 20 minutes from the Juan Santamaria international airport (SJO) through the main highway after Real Cariari, Los Arcos and La Sabana.
